Bucharest's National Museum of Art of Romania (MNAR) is a must-see for any visitor. Housing the country's most significant and extensive art collection, spanning centuries and continents.


The museum offers a delightful way to spend an afternoon, showcasing impressive works categorised into three main galleries:


  • Old Romanian Art Gallery: This gallery showcases Romanian art from the mediaeval period to the 18th century, including religious paintings, sculptures, and decorative art.


  • Modern Romanian Art Gallery:This gallery houses works by prominent Romanian artists from the 19th to the 21st centuries, reflecting the evolution of Romanian art movements.


  • European Art Gallery:  This gallery features works by renowned European artists like El Greco, Rembrandt, Rubens, Tintoretto, and Van Dyck

Originally established in 1948, the museum has undergone several name changes and relocations.


Despite a temporary closure of its permanent exhibition (1990-2000), it continued to offer temporary showcases. In 2013, the museum expanded, incorporating three permanent galleries within the historical spaces of the former Royal Palace, adding to its grandeur.

The National Museum of Art of Romania has welcomed visitors since 1950. Within its walls lies a wealth of artistic treasures. 


The museum experience extends further, incorporating the grandeur of the former royal palace. Explore the historical significance of the Throne Hall, the opulent Royal Dining Room, and the majestic Voivodes' Staircase.


The museum itself is a architectural gem. Built between 1906 and 1920 by Nicolae Grimberghe in a Neoclassical style, the building is characterised by its imposing facade, grand columns, and symmetrical design.


When can you visit the National Museum of Art of Romania in Bucharest?


Wednesday-Friday 10am-6pm

Saturday-Sunday 11am-7pm, 

Monday and Tuesday closed.

Ticket fees:


Although all the galleries are under one roof you must buy separated tickets in order to visit them.


Tickets can be purchased online or at the museum entrance.


The online tickets are slightly more expensive (with approx half of euro). 


Free entrance for all public categories on December 1 - Romania's National Day and on January 15 - National Culture Day!

Adults 4.8 euros (24 Lei)

Seniors 2,4 euros (12 Lei)  

Children 1.2 euros (6 Lei)

Pupils and students, adults with moderate or mild disabilities 1,2 euros (6 Lei)


European Art Gallery fees:

English/French speaking guide 50 euros/hour for groups of 1-20 persons

However, its size is a consideration. To truly appreciate the museum's riches, we recommend setting aside two to three hours for your visit. This will allow you to immerse yourself in the collections and savour the artistic journey.
